Sarah:  I was halfwayhome before I worked it out. Remember when I asked what number you'd dialed andyou said you didn't know? I thought you were talking nonsense, but you weren't.It goes something like this. Rod takes you to the shop but before he leaves youthere he phones home. The point is he uses the shop phone, presumably he paidto or something. Later on everything's gone wrong and you want to talk to Rod,but my guess is you don't even know his number. Then you realize, most phonesthese days have last number redial. Even blind in the dark you can find onebutton.

Police sirens are heard from outside. Boy sits down.

Sarah:  Is that youback?

Boy:  Yeah, I'mlistening.

Sarah:  Problem was, between Rod phoning and you the shopkeeper must have tried to phone us. So thewrong number was in the memory. Right?

Boy:  Right.

Sarah:  So when Iheard a certain Mr Lorenzo had been trying to call us all evening, I put twoand two together. You see, we know Mr Lorenzo quite well. He owns a chain ofnewsagents on the south side, gives us quite a lot of distribution problems. He's got one shop that opens late, the one he runs himself. The one you'rein.

Boy:  Pretty sure ofyour guess, right?

Sarah:  Pretty sure.Time to answer one question?

Boy:  No-one seems tobe in a hurry here.

Sarah:  How did youknow it was us? Last time you phoned, I mean.

Boy:  Well I saw himtrying to make that call. I just got forgot later. Kept muttering about thedamn Junior Gazette. Don't think he liked your paper much. The late Mr Lorenzo.I didn't mean to kill him. Really I didn't. You've got to believe that. Do you?

Sarah:  Yeah.

Boy:  What's yourname?

Sarah:  Sarah.

Boy:  Jack...

He hangs up, squinting against the bright light from aflashlight.
