Thanks so much for that Vince!
I had almost forgotten that that episode was the first episode of PG I had
ever watched. And I instantly liked it.
The observation you made about Spike’s harsh references To his parents is
very concise, and is actually really rather sad, as it was making a
poignant point…

> The episode starts with Lynda handing out yellow chits (love that word
> ‘chits’), which means she wants people to work a late duty from 5:30pm
> till 10pm on a Saturday night. It’s something she only asks them to do once
> a month, but on a Saturday night!! Are you being serious, Lynda? These are
> teenagers. Most of them would have better things to do. Though Sarah seems
> keen to spend her Saturday evening catching up on homework. I personally
> spent most of my Saturday evenings as a teenager sitting at home, but
> that’s another story.
>
> Lynda is on very cutting form and even refers to Spike as “it’s.”
>
> I love the scene where Spike tells a funny story about his Uncle, Crazy
> Eddie and his lawnmower. The story builds and builds but ends without a
> punchline. The reaction from Tiddler is priceless. Great acting from
> Joanna Dukes.
>
> The anger between Lynda and Spike gets really heated. So much so, he looks
> like he is almost about to hit her. Instead he thankfully just throws some
> paper at her.
>
> Paul Reynolds is on brilliant form. He’s totally on edge, as Lynda says. I
> didn’t realise until he pulled it off, that his rabbit costume nose is made
> from a ping!
>
> I laughed at the part where Spike jumps on to the table. I wonder if
> Dexter Fletcher could do this now, given that he’s 56 years old. I am 51
> and I know I certainly couldn’t do it. Not sure I ever could!
>
> It’s interesting to hear Spike talk about his Mum and Dad. Though the line
> he says about his Dad thinking “that apologising is what your wife does if
> you hit her enough”, is really shocking and no way would that line be used
> in a children’s drama today.
>
> I love the scene where Spike cooks a meal in the Junior Gazette offices.
> It looks really tasty. I love it when Lynda says “Get on with your
> eating!” The way that a lump of meat flies into Kenny’s face is
> hilarious.
>
> I wonder what it was like to film that meal scene. They may have been sick
> to their stomachs having to eat all that food, over multiple takes.
> Hopefully it was still warm and they didn’t mind too much.
>
> This was a really enjoyable episode and I look forward to the next one.
>
> Thanks for reading.
