[pressgang] An idea

Thanks both Laura and Vince for your posts about episode 1 (Vince – your post did come through for me).

I like the idea about re-watching the episodes, but so far haven’t actually gotten to episode 1 yet. But I do enjoy reading other people’s thoughts about the episode – it really brings it to life.

I enjoyed reading that, Laura.

The talking over the end credits was a great idea. Did the show Drop The Dead Donkey do this first, or did Press Gang do it first?

By the way, has my post about episode one been received by anyone. I posted it on Monday night, but I never saw it appear.

I decided this was the perfect time to introduce my eldest girl (9) to PG, and we watched the first episode together last night.

My first impressions were that it was too old for her - I think the witty repartee went over her head a bit (it probably did for me at that age, but as I watched and rewatched it so often, it eventually sunk in!), and she was more interested in working out who all the characters were. There are a *lot* of new characters for a first episode! We are introduced to Lynda, Spike, Kenny, Frazz, Colin, Danny, Sarah, Julie, Mr Sullivan, Mr Kerr, Chrissy, Mr Vader off the top of my head!

I think kids' TV is much softer these days - Lynda is really quite unkind to Gormless Godfrey - that sort of low-level bullying wouldn't be condoned today (or if it was shown, he'd do something to "redeem" himself).

There were also more scenes than I remembered with adults talking to each other (e.g. Kerr and Sullivan), which isn't that engaging for children.

As an adult rewatching it myself, I thought the dialogue was still snappy and pacey (albeit diction wasn't perfect among the cast members so some lines were nearly lost). Everyone looks so YOUNG! I wondered how Sullivan and Kerr were supposed to know each other - it was heavily suggested that they weren't new acquaintances.

The voiceover at the end credits is brilliant. My daughter loved this - they never watch the credits these days because you can click "next" to go to the next episode, so she thought this was fantastic.

Eldest girl was keen to watch more episodes (I'm rationing them to one a week for the full 80s' experience), which is an accolade.

It's a wonderful idea Vince - I'm up for doing it too when I can! Very
interested in the nostalgic aspect - taking me back to my teenage years
- but also seeing how the episodes stand up in today's climate..

Kevin: I wonder if it would be possible to sync the QOTD with this
schedule? What do you think? :-)

Cheers,
Matt.
