[pressgang] Photo finish reaction

Eldest girl (9) and I sat down to watch the second episode. Thoughts:

- I loved the Spike/Lynda banter - thick and fast immediately. I got a bit
cross with Eldest girl as she kept asking questions during the
stichomythia, therefore missing the punchline. I love the dialogue, but
objectively it's much *too* fast for the intended audience, plus some of
the actors speak too quickly/garble their lines.

- Eldest loved the part where Lynda embarrasses Spike in front of his
friends. She "got" this more easily than some of the other dialogue. The
line "I'd drink her bathwater" is a bit weird and unpleasant and we didn't
dwell on it!

- She was also astonished that chips were 30p.

- We spent a very long time with the DVD paused because she couldn't
understand a) why the newsroom's phone needed to be plugged in b) why they
couldn't just get a phone c) why you would need to pay to make a call. This
whole subplot left her a bit baffled!

- I wondered why the council offices were open on a Saturday. Eldest was
not so interested in this.

- She liked Spike dressed as a Viking. Though was keen to tell me that
Vikings didn't really have horns on their hats.

- She's still keen to watch more - though I think she's more interested in
the characters than the dialogue. I suspect I was the same at her age. I'm
not 100% sure she's following the plot. It's a lot for kids to take in -
there's a newspaper, the characters have to find stories, but somehow they
also have a reporting line into the Gazette, if they print the wrong thing
they can get into trouble... it's pretty unfamiliar. Let alone trying to
explain what paste and layout is!
